Scrum, but with a Twist

What is Scrum?

Scrum is an agile framework for managing and organizing complex projects. It provides a flexible and iterative approach to project management, emphasizing collaboration, transparency, and adaptability. Scrum was initially developed for software development but has since been applied to various industries and types of projects.

By any means, FerventFather isn’t calling children projects. If fact, children are good gifts from the Lord Himself. What we advocate for is to apply a similar framework to the spiritual development of our children. That is to say plan, execute, and evaluate.

What is Jaunt?

Here at FerventFather, we tackle and manage spiritual development with the ‘Jaunt’ framework. Similar to Scrum in many ways, we found it appropriate to tailor the name due to a difference in the prescribed ‘ceremonies’ and ‘roles’.

Development Backlog:  is an emergent, ordered list of what is needed or desired to achieve a child’s growth and development.

Growth Story: a small, self-contained unit growth designed to accomplish a specific goal within a child’s developmental journey. A growth story is usually written from the parent’s perspective and follows the format: “As [a father/mother], I want [to perform this action] so that [I can accomplish this goal].” The acceptance criteria are the conditions that aim to improve the quality and outcome of a growth story.

Jaunt Backlog: a list of growth stories parents plan to complete during a jaunt.

Jaunt: a time-boxed event of one to four weeks in which parents focus on a sprint goal.

Encouragement & Accountability: the purpose of the daily E&A is for parents to motivate and support each other’s progress toward their goals.

Review, Retrospective, and Plan: [Review]Parents shows what they achieved during the jaunt. Typically this takes the form of testimonials or photos/videos/ect. [Retrospective] a dedicated period at the end of each jaunt for parents to reflect on how they are doing and to find ways that may help them improve in their descipleship. [Plan] planning is 1) selecting the desired set of growth stories to work on during the jaunt and 2) to discuss each item enough to feel confident on the discipleship goal.

Incremental Growth & Development: is everything that has been descipled to your children, plus anything new you just finished in the latest jaunt, all engrained, tested, and ready for their own walk.
